Red Barn opens 50th season Wednesday

NO SEX: The Red Barn opens its season Wednesday with the farce, “No Sex Please, We’re British.” The cast takes the stage at 8 p.m.

The Red Barn Summer Theatre will open its 50th Anniversary season with “No Sex Please, We’re British.” The farce is written by Alistair Food and Anthony Marriott.

The play includes a young bride and her husband, the assistant manager of the bank above which the newlyweds live.

The young bride innocently – but spectacularly – errs when placing a mail order for Scandinavian glassware. What she receives is Scandinavian pornography.

Although the audience hears many references and innuendoes about the special delivery, they never see anything off-color.

The plot revolves around the different characters’ reactions to the veritable floods of pornography, scandalous books, films, pictures and even young women who arrive at the apartment as a result of the misguided order.

According to the farce’s description on the Red Barn web site, “The matter is considerably complicated by the man’s mother, his boss, a visiting bank inspector, a police superintendent, and a muddled friend who does everything wrong in his reluctant efforts to set everything right, all of which works up to a hilarious ending of closed or slamming doors.”

The play has successfully entertained Broadway audiences and ran in London for eight years.

Showings run Wednesday-Sunday, June 13-17 and June 20-24. The play begins at 8 p.m. Wednesday-Saturday, with 2 p.m. matinees on Sunday.
