FFD extinguishes Fontana Fasteners fire

BY SHARON BARDONNER - sbardonner@ftimes.com

The Frankfort Fire Department answered a call at Fontana Fasteners, 3595 W. State Rd. 28, Monday evening to extinguish a smoke stack fire.

According to FFD Chief John Kirby, the department dispatched a ladder truck, three engines and nine firefighters to the scene and had the fire under control within 15 minutes. The firefighters stayed at the plant to ensure everything was safe.

Also, Kirby saw to it that the workers were released to return to their production lines as soon as possible. “We didn’t want any of their product to be ruined, so we let them go back to take care of their lines while we cleaned up.”

Kirby said they also called in six off-duty crew members to cover the rest of the city during the call.

The fire started in one of the smoke stacks in the prewash area, he said. “It’s just like your chimney at home, if you don’t keep it clean, you get soot built up in there, and it can cause a chimney fire. That’s what happened there – they had fire up around the roof and some inside.”

Kirby said Fontana’s fire escape plan worked well.

“The plant did a good job of getting everyone evacuated,” he said.

Also, Assistant Fire Chief Ed Cripe noted that the plant’s fire suppression system was working.
