Punch renders recipient unconscious

BY SHARON BARDONNER - sbardonner@ftimes.com

Clinton County Sheriff’s Deputies Benjamin Knapp and Tom Farlow, along with Rossville Deputy Town Marshal Joel Hargett, responded to a complaint of battery in the 900 block of E. County Road 700 N. where an anniversary party was in progress.

The host of the party, Eddie Wright Sr., reported to Knapp that a physical fight had broken out during the party between his son, Eddie Wright II, and a guest, Ned Crum, 47, according to the court affidavit.

Two guests at the party advised CCSO deputies they had seen Crum punch Eddie Wright in the face, knocking him unconscious. One of the guests also reported that both Crum and Wright had been drinking prior to the incident, which was believed to be sparked by a comment Eddie Wright made that angered Crum, per the court document.

The suspect had left the scene to go to a home in the 4300 block of E. State Road 26, where Hargett found him. As Knapp approached, he could Hargett arguing with an individual, whom he found to be Crum.

Crum attempted to close the door on Knapp and struggled briefly with the deputy to avoid being restrained but capitulated when Hargett drew his Taser, the affidavit said.

Crum was charged July 5 in Clinton Circuit Court with battery resulting in serious bodily injury, a Level 5 felony, and resisting law enforcement, a Class A misdemeanor.
