Summer String Orchestra to play at Skanta

BY SUSIE BLACKMORE

The Frankfort Community Public Library will host a free Summer String Orchestra in concert Saturday, July 21 in the Elizabeth O’Rear Skanta Theatre.

The concert, performed by a 20-piece orchestra featuring Jesse Garcia, will start at 7:30 p.m. Garcia is a violist from the Philharmonic of Indianapolis who was born and raised in Clinton County. As a child, he found a passion for music through his family. Garcia began his study of the viola when he was 12 years old, under the guidance of Janet Priest of Mulberry.

This is the group’s third year playing.

Seating is limited and available on a first-come, first seated basis, so be sure to arrive a little early. The doors open at 7 p.m. All ages are welcome.

The concert will take listeners through time as they hear pieces from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic and Contemporary eras.

Attendees are sure to hear some beautiful music, learn a little about the history of music and gain some information on specific composers.

Volunteer for the Clinton County Literacy Program

The Clinton County Family Literacy Program is collaborating with the Clinton County Family YMCA and Boys and Girls Club through July with its “Reach Out and Read” program.

Through the program, volunteers with the Frankfort Community Public Library read aloud to children at the two agencies. All of the books being read can be checked out from FCPL.

Reading aloud, a time-honored tradition in so many families, is actually a wonderful way to help children reach their full potential, according to Reach Out and Read, a nonprofit agency that works to expand childhood literacy through read-aloud practices.

Our volunteer readers support our community by reading aloud to children during the different programs we offer throughout the year. For more information or to volunteer, contact Maria Lopez, 765-654-8746, literacy@myfcpl.org.

The Clinton County Family Literacy Program is a United Way agency.
