Clinton Prairie tied for the best record at Saturday’s Winamac Duals wrestling tournament but were kept from bringing home a championship trophy due to tiebreakers and missing a few wrestlers for the event.

“All the tiebreakers went to the other two teams,” Gophers head coach Joey Mitchell said of West Central and Delphi, which had identical 4-1 records to Prairie. “We’ve got some injuries we’ve been dealing with, but that’s nothing new. We ended up losing two weight classes today. Kids, with other issues, weren’t able to come wrestle today, so we gave up four weight classes and still went 4-1.”

Despite those obstacles, he was happy with his squad’s performance during the tournament.

“Overall we wrestled pretty good,” Mitchell said. “We came out with four individual champions.”

Those champions were Sam Gonzalez at 162 lbs., Sean Patrick (285), Jaime Escareno (182) and Jason Stevens (195).

“Those guys had the best records in their weight class for the day,” Mitchell noted. “Everybody but Sam was undefeated and Sam was 3-2, but it was just such a tough weight class that 3-2 was enough to have the best record of all the teams that were there. “

The tournament featured eight teams. Along with Delphi and West Central, Triton, Frontier, Winamac, Caston and Wheeler were among teams participating. Prairie lost its only match, 35-24, to West Central.

“It’s a good start to the season 5-1,” Mitchell said. “We went 4-1 today and beat Guerin (Catholic) last week. “

“We get some people healthy, get some personal issues taken care of and clean a few things up on the mat and I think we very easily could have brought a trophy home today. Sometimes that happens.”

Others wrestling during the tournament for the Gophers included Braden Baulser (113), David Lasbrook (120), Jared Ray (126), Drew Duarte (138), Lucas Baker (145) and Alec Sherrick (170).
