Building great habits

Jen Casey - FCPL Assistant Director

Frankfort Community Public Library’s Summer Reading Program has just begun. It will run from June 3 through July 27. We had an amazing kickoff party in collaboration with the Frankfort Parks Department. At the library, we believe reading is a fundamental keystone habit that we should all strive to include every day in our busy lives. A keystone habit is something we do regularly that builds upon itself and starts a chain reaction that positively affects other areas of our lives. Why not work toward building that habit as a family this summer while also working toward winning incredible prizes?

Another reason to join in on the fun is to prevent the “summer slide.” Numerous studies have shown that students who do not read during the summer will slide back to a lower reading level by the next school year. But how do you get your kids to read? The best indicator of a child that reads is if parents read themselves. They are watching your every move and they will copy what you do. If you model the habit of reading, this will give your kids an advantage in school and in life. Not sure what you would like to read? Come to the library. We can help you find a book you will really enjoy.

The Library’s Summer Reading Program is for everyone. The rules are simple. Check out books, magazines, or audiobooks: Get an entry. Tell us about the book you read or listened to: Get an entry. Come to any library program: Get an entry. The prize boxes are located on the main desk. Decide what you’d like to win and drop your slip into that prize box. We will hold the drawings at the end of June and at the end of July. Prizes include a family vacation to Holiday World, Indians Game Night Out, Get Air tickets, YMCA 3-month family membership, and so much more.

If you haven’t been to the library in a while, come see what incredible things we have to offer. Your library has live theater, an art gallery, music concerts, movies on the big screen, gardening, cooking classes, art classes, and the list goes on and on. All programs throughout the summer are eligible for a prize entry, so bring the whole family.
