The Red Barn Summer Theatre opens its final production of its 51st season tonight with “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to The Forum” by Stephen Sondheim and Larry Gelbart.

“This award-winning musical is known to be Broadway’s greatest farce,” a Red Barn press release notes. “(It) is light, witty and possibly the most uproarious musical ever written.”

“This favored Sondheim musical is sure to please any audience and we are excited to bring this production, featuring actors from around the country, to our audiences from throughout central Indiana,” Red Barn artistic director Michael Taylor said. “It is truly a musical that ‘has something for everybody, a comedy tonight’ as proclaimed in the lyrics of the show’s theme song.”

Performances are at 8 p.m. from Wednesday through Saturday with Sunday matinee performances at 2 p.m. The show’s run ends at the Red Barn on July 21. A special Family Night performance will take place next Tuesday beginning at 5:30 p.m., with family activities prior to the performance.

For this special performance of Sondheim and Gelbart’s play, anyone ages 4 to 18 will receive a free ticket with the purchase of an adult ticket.

Pre-show entertainment begins at 4:30 p.m. before the show on the lawn with local musician Gibson Wells performing and free pizza, chips and soft drinks served.

Free ice cream treats will be distributed at intermission during the second annual Family Night. Prize drawings for Red Barn T-Shirts and a pair of season tickets for the 2020 season will also be held at intermission.

After Tuesday’s performance, the actors will be available on the lawn to meet parents and children in attendance for photographs.

“Family Night is yet another way the Barn is striving to make theater affordable for families and inclusive of young people,” On-Stage Foundation Chief Administrative Officer Rex Camp said, noting that last year’s inaugural family night was a “big success” and encouraging those interested in attending to call in advance ((765) 659-1657) to reserve seats.

Several sponsors provided support to make Family Night possible, including Greek’s Pizzeria, Genda Funeral Home, Miller’s Body Shop, Thorntown Veterinary Clinic, Moxie Mavens, CVS Pharmacy, Wal-Mart, Coco Beans/Hawaiian Shave Ice, Cherri Flora, Stitching By Sam, Glover’s Ice Cream, the Frankfort Community Public Library, Heather’s Flowers, Frito-Lay, COACH Kids and the Indiana Arts Commission through the Regional Partnership Program administered by the Tippecanoe Arts Federation.

The Red Barn Summer Theatre is one of only three independent professional summer theaters remaining in Indiana and provides college theater graduates and students a professional opportunity to hone their craft in an intense theater production environment, the release notes, adding “many past company members have gone on to successful careers in film and theater.”
