Art lovers are invited to step into a new world of abstract nature at the Anna & Harlan Hubbard Gallery on the second floor of the Frankfort Community Public Library. The exhibit, Inspired by Nature: Plant Based Abstracts by Heidi Harner is free and open to the public throughout the month of August.

The Friends of the Frankfort Library hosted the gallery opening on Saturday for a first look at the works and to meet and greet with Harner, a Lafayette artist who works in oil, acrylic, charcoal and pencil.

Harner has been painting professionally for 18 years, starting with tent shows and pet portraits, and she eventually found her current style, abstract inspired by nature. Her work has been featured in previous art shows at the library and is on display in the Caza Sikes Gallery in Cincinnati.

Susie Blackmore, marketing and art manager at FCPL, said stepping into the gallery is like “entering a whole new world.” The large paintings feature many blues, greens, oranges and reds, casting the space in calming glow.

Many of Harner’s paintings are inspired by the prairie grass garden in her yard, full of grasses, flowers and pollinators. The works feature swirls and swishes of color and abstractly recognizable elements of nature, like a poppy or a bee, allowing viewers to experience nature in a whole new way.

“It is not so much that I am painting the flower or the bee, but the essence of it. The colors, shapes, emotion of it is what I am after. I want people to feel it,” Harner said.

Inspired by Nature will be on display in the Hubbard Gallery through Aug. 30. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.

Artwork is for sale, and a portion of each sale may be tax deductible.
