Sheets and Woods secure at-large seats on city council

In a municipal general election that had just two contested races, the two at-large seats on the Frankfort City Council and the makeup of the Colfax Town Council were decided once all precincts reported after polls closed at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Clinton County.

In the race for the two at-large seats on the city council, Megan Sheets garnered 45.8 percent of the vote (859) while incumbent Eric Woods retained his at-large seat with 40.3 percent of the vote (755). The two Republicans defeated Democratic challenger David A. “Riggsy” Riggs, who received 260 votes for 13.9 percent of the vote.

In the race for five seats on the Colfax Town Council, Marty Stevens (R) led all candidates for town council with 17.8 percent of the vote (62), followed by Mike Brothers (R) at 12.9 percent (45), Brian Boksa (D) at 12 percent (42), and Gavin Jones (R) at 11.5 percent (40). For the fifth seat, Vince Scott (R) and Katie Allen (D) each received 10.3 percent of the vote with 36 votes apiece to tie.

According to Indiana Code 3-12-9-4, “The fiscal body of a political subdivision that receives notice under section 3 of this chapter shall resolve the tie vote by electing a person to fill the office not later than December 31 following the election at which the tie vote occurred. The fiscal body shall select one (1) of the candidates who was involved in the tie vote to fill the office.”

There were a total of 1,165 votes in the municipal general election our of 8,441 eligible votes for the contested races. There were 837 votes on Election Day and 328 absentee. There were 424 who voted straight-ticket Republican and just four who voted straight-ticket Democrat.
