A Frankfort man died after his motorcycle left the roadway and struck a concrete culvert along Ind. 38 on Sunday afternoon southeast of Frankfort in rural Clinton County.

Clinton County Central Dispatch received 911 calls regarding a single-vehicle motorcycle crash with injuries at approximately 3 p.m. Sunday at Ind. 38 and Co. Road 500 S. and Co. Road 450 E. – an area where Ind. 38 jogs into two nearly 90 degree turns where Co. Road 500 S. runs east and Co. Road 450 E. runs south from the jog.

According to the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary investigation by deputies on scene indicates that three motorcycles were traveling westbound on Ind. 38 E. As they were entering the second curve, the lead motorcycle, a Black 2004 Honda CBR, went off the north side of the roadway and struck a concrete drainage culvert.

The operator of the motorcycle was identified as Leonardo Hernandez Jimenez, 20, of Frankfort.

Hernandez was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and was the sole occupant of the vehicle. He died at the scene from his injuries. Speed is believed to be a factor in this crash.

Hernandez was an active member of the United States Army National Guard.

“This is another tragic event that we have seen all too often this summer,” Sheriff Rich Kelly said. “I am saddened to respond to another scene with a preventable outcome. My condolences go out to the Hernandez family and to all of our first responders. I also want to thank Mr. Hernandez for his service in the Army National Guard. I ask the community to drive with care on our roadways – be mindful of your speed and maintain your lane. Please be courteous to others and maintain safe distances while following and while passing. Our Chaplains have been made available to all first responders and to the family. Stay Safe, Clinton County.”

Deputies were assisted by the Clinton County Central Dispatch, the Clinton County Coroner’s Office, Kirklin Fire, Kirklin Ambulance, Clinton County EMS, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office Chaplains and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
